Ottomar Rothmann war Häftling in Buchenwald. Er beschreibt das „alltägliche Leben“: von der Ankunft bis zum Tod. Die Hierarchie unter den verschiedenen Häftlingsgruppen ist ein Thema. Die kleinen Freiheiten, die sie der SS abtrotzten ebenso wie die unabwendbare Abfolge von Erniedrigungen. Die heutigen Bilder des Konzentrationslagers sind ein Palimpsest auf das Erinnerungen wie auch touristische Ansichten aufbauen.

Aus der Jurybegründung: Es sind Bilder, die gleichzeitig leer und verlassen wirken, aber dennoch so dicht gefüllt sind von den Erinnerungen an das Grauen von damals. Rothmanns ruhiger Erzählton und Kutschkers Kamera ergänzen sich perfekt. Sie lassen die Erinnerungen im Kopf wieder auferstehen.

Ottomar Rothmann was imprisoned at Buchenwald concentration camp. He describes „daily life“ there, from arrival to death. One theme is the hierarchy among the different groups of inmates. He tells of the small liberties wrested from the SS and of the unavoidable series of humiliations. The images of Buchenwald as it is today are a palimpsest upon which these memories and the tourist’s view are superimposed.
